This Girl’s A Killer by Emma C. Wells was a rather humorous tale of a female serial killer. Cecilia is a young woman trying to make her way in the world as a pharmaceutical salesman and also as a killer. She doesn’t like the term serial killer as she doesn’t kill indiscriminately and only kills the men who deserve it, which is apparently more than you would think, but she is adamant about not killing innocents. She does her best to protect her best friend and her goddaughter from her actions as they are the only people she lets close. When things start unintentionally snowballing against her, in both jobs, she now has to figure out a way out of her mess without having the police suspect her. Something that potentially gets trickier when she ends up killing her best friend’s boyfriend and having to hide the body and said best friend is trying to get her to date a police officer on the case. Trying to hide her kills and hide her using the drugs she was supposed to be selling but was instead using for her kills she ends up slowly becoming this gigantic mess.
This book was intriguing because it is about this woman who is remarkably human and normal. She has this traumatic past that is only revealed in bits and pieces and drabbles over the course of the story as she struggles with everything going on in her life. At the same time she is this ruthless and relatively cold-blooded killer who honestly doesn’t see anything wrong with what she has been doing. She is methodical and determined and above all else protective of her little makeshift chosen family. It is only when these things clash and get mixed together with a side of the unexpected that she starts getting flustered. The reason it was amusing though was reading her thought process as she finds herself getting stuck further and further down that hole. Watching her get upset when the blood ruins her really expensive high end clothing but not get upset that it is all over the tile floor was rather entertaining. It really helps highlight that in the end she is just as human as the rest of us despite her vocation as a killer and despite her idiosyncrasies. At the same time it also shows how just one or two things can make it all come crashing down if you are not careful. The story definitely had its serious moments which is only natural given the plot but it also had some hidden humor in there as well. It ended up being this story about a weird, quirky and anxiety ridden modern woman just trying to live her best life and moonlighting as a killer trying to protect all of the innocent women in the world. I am giving it four out of five stars.
This is a good example of a thriller and would hold considerable appeal for those who tend to prefer that kind of thing. Considering the plot the book does deal with some potentially troublesome or difficult topics though so I would recommend being cautious as it can be graphic at times. For the same reason I would not recommend this book for underage readers as it would not be overly appropriate for them. It doesn’t stop it from being a pretty good book overall though so if it sounds like something you would enjoy I suggest you think about trying it. Just make sure you think it through first. As always feel free to share your thoughts in the comments if you decide to try it.
