Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote is the story of Holly Golightly, a young woman who seems incapable of taking anything seriously. She is a former actress who has moved to New York and views the world through an extremely naïve and innocent perspective. As she likes to point out, nothing bad can happen at Tiffany’s and so she has long wished to have breakfast there.
I am going to admit that I had no idea what to expect when I picked this up but I will also say that it was a pretty good read. Reading about the adventures, so to speak, of Holly Golightly was pretty hilarious. She is the type of woman who is always doing something and always getting into trouble, mind you she is also usually telling some pretty tall tales about what she has been up to or about what she has been planning. However, since the narrator is actually a young man who was her neighbor at one point in time it is rather difficult to determine if she actually believed her stories or if she knew she was merely making them up. Her personality seemed to come across as needing to believe in them in order to cope with the world. It created this extremely interesting and complex character that seems simple on the surface. I am rather unsure about what the plot actually was as it seemed to be no more than a recollection of her adventures and time living in the same apartment as the narrator. Even with that I enjoyed the book though and am happy to give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
This book is often considered a modern classic due to its popularity but it can also be classified as realistic fiction. If you enjoy that kind of work than you should consider trying it out. I will say that it is a fast easy read so it shouldn’t be hard for anyone to read. The book is probably aimed at adult readers but there is little content that would make it unsuitable for younger readers. There might be some slight innuendo and other references they may not understand but nothing overly graphic. Like I said, it is still a pretty good book and one that I enjoyed so I hope you consider trying it. If you do feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
